Wednesday afternoon I was expecting just another typical child abuse case that was sent to my clinic. The 9 yo old showed up in clinic with mom with bruises alleged by stepdad. Looks like this wasn't a one time deal. Anyways, this is going to a Courts Martial and I begin documenting the injuries with descriptions and photographs, I found myself perplexed on how to date bruises in a dark skinned African American child. Our typical use of yellow, green, brown, red,etc. hues isn't applying well here. All I see are bright red, which I assume is 0-2 days in age and everything else hyperpigmented compared to normal surrounding skin. Question is...any sources or an atlas for injuries secondary to child abuse in children with darker skin tones?
