omphalitis/Dr. Fleiss

I have read the same studies which show a longer time for cord separation when alcohol is used. This couple had a home birth and applied golden seal (an antibacterial agent) to the umbilicus. This practice is common among midwives, and none that I know personally have seen such a rapid, invasive infection as this baby had. I am trying to gather more information on omphalitis and especially severe cases leading to necrotizing faciitis. Does anyone have some experience with this type of infection? By the way-Dr. Paul Fleiss is the pediatrician you are discussing. He is an outspoken opponent of circumcision, and a supporter of a parent's right to choose which, if any, vaccinations are appropriate for their children. He has a large following in the natural parenting movement, and I believe his daughter's exploits have had little effect on that. I would venture to say that most of the people familiar with either father or daughter are probably not aware that they are related. (Or are unaware of the other's existence!) Shelleen
