We use 6 digit numbers - the last digit denotes the child's "number" 0-9. I don't
know what happens if we have a family with 11 kids.
We use family charts - all kids in one family. Makes it easy when mom says "this
child is doing the same thing his brother did last year..."

We file charts using this system and seldom have any misfiled or hard to
find.  Using color coded letters on the edges of the charts makes it easy
to identify if any charts are out of place.
