Re: topical analgesics vs oral pain meds

In significant pain, I'd rather add Tylenol with codeine elixir, approx 1 tsp per
25 lbs. for 3 or 4 dosages total.  I think there is significant pain from the
structures in the middle ear, not just the pain from a stretched drum. Ear pain
can be quite severe. Plus, if the patients with recurrent otitis have some at
home, they are less likely to go to the ER at night when the pain starts.

Do you mean as sole therapy, or just for the pain, until the antibiotic
starts to work?  I use them a lot in addition to antibiotics.  Haven't tried
them alone yet.
