Re: topical analgesics vs oral pain meds

I could not agree more. I am somewhat liberal with pain meds for severe OM (esp the toddler and older child) and stomatitis. Yet, I do not give patients quantities to save for a rainy day.

I think that we as physician's do an injustice to our patients and forget about the relieving pain when we think about "treatment"

In significant pain, I'd rather add Tylenol with codeine elixir, approx 1 tsp per

structures in the middle ear, not just the pain from a stretched drum. Ear pain
can be quite severe. Plus, if the patients with recurrent otitis have some at
home, they are less likely to go to the ER at night when the pain starts.
