I think what's awkward about this sort of encounter is the professional is embarrassed to explicitly remind the parent that this is a professional encounter, but feels compelled to do so. In truth, it would be wormy to say, "Well, I'll look but I'll have to charge you." So I say, "Sure, let's have my nurse get his/her chart and a 'visit slip' (I don't say 'billing slip') and when we've got everything ready, I'll come take a look." I go see scheduled patients and come back when the charts are ready to go. I think this puts the onus back on the parent, where it belongs (since the parent is in effect asking you to drop everything, forget your scheduled patients, and not receive any compensation whatsoever).
