> does anyone out there rehydrate the children in the office with IV's, > rather than having to send them into the hospital as a 23 hour admit for > fluids? Having done claims review, I can tell you that MANY physicians do this. And as long as you have a reasonably comfortable place for mom and kid to sit/lie and wait, you're right, they'll love it. > I'm not sure how we would bill With the usual every-state-is-different caveat: there's a code for starting the IV, infusion over less- or more-than a certain number of hours, and if the physician him/herself comes to check on the patient periodically, there's a physician supervision code. You can't bill for the hydration fluids or supplies separately, but if you give some Compazine (for example) for nausea, you can bill for that. PLUS you can still bill for the physician visit. Just make sure the gastroenteritis and dehydration are the first two ICD-9 codes.
