goat's milk

Goat's milk, since it is the milk of a species other than human, is just as
allergenic as cow milk. It would be only a matter of time, probably, before
the baby developed a goat milk allergy as well. Also, Goat milk is deficient
in some of the vitamins. The best solution for an allergic baby is to try to
get the mom to relactate and feed human milk. Second best would be human
milk from a donor who would be willing to eliminate allergenic food from her
diet. Third best would be hypoallergenic artificial milk (Nutramigen,
Alimentum or Neocate)--the baby will take it if hungry enough and it's what's
offered.

These cases drive me nuts--if moms would breastfeed, we wouldn't see these
protein allergies! (And, they can be quite severe, I know). Larry Gartner
MD states that he has never seen a case of documented allergy to human milk,
although it is possible to see allergies to substances excreted into the milk
that the mom is ingesting.
