I really laughed when I read Dr. Bruce Taubman's column in the August, 1997 Pediatric News. He proposes three new codes which, though meant to tickle our funny bone, would be very useful in my practice. His suggestions (Dr. Pillsbury are you out there): 99601 EXAMINATION OF A CHILD OTHER THAN THE SCHEDULED PATIENT. This code should be used when the physician is asked to examine a sibling, cousin or playmate of the scheduled patient and the office is running so far behind as to preclude pulling a chart and creating a separate billing sheet. This includes, but is not limited to, looking at rashes, warts, moles, and healed lacerations. 99702 CONSULTATION PROVIDED IN A SETTING OTHER THAN THE PHYSICIAN'S OFFICE OR HOSPITAL. This code is to be used when the physician is consulted in the supermarket, at a restaurant, or standing in line waiting at the movie theatre. Use code 99701 for the same service provided in the hospital hallway or office parking lot. -77 EXAMINATION OF INANIMATE OBJECTS This modifier is to be attached to an office visit code (such as 99212 or 99213_ when the physician, in the course of examining the child, also is asked to perform a thorough examination of a doll, Power Ranger, or a teddy bear.
