This brings up a good question I've not seen addressed previously: charging for copying medical records. We never do for a routine change to another office (for whatever the reason), or if a consultant needs the notes. We have on occasions when a family changes, then calls at some future time saying they need the records again and can't get them from the interim office (which usually means that
that office does charge). <<<<
We don't charge for anyone ever and I think we should. I am considering instituting a 25cents/page charge for photocopies of records for any purpose whatever. I would put it on the patient's bill and not insist on payment before sending records.
I'm sure Wyoming Medicaid would not cover it (35% of my practice) so that much would be written off.
I believe some offices charge after one set of free records, but that sounds cumbersome to track over time.
No practitioners in Sheridan charge for copies when patients switch providers, as far as I know, but it seems to me 25cents a sheet would be nice.
By the way, PCC (not the practice management company I use--at this time) has a nice routine which sends a listing of visits and diagnoses straight from the billing software.
