Haven't done it, but have seen it recommended many times.

If you think a family may have reason to sue (justified or not), it may be
best to just write that one off, although they can use that against you in
court, too ("Did you write that off because you felt guilty about making a
mistake, Doctor?"). Otherwise I'd try to collect.
