(Obviously before being arrested became a status symbol in some circles ...) Even when I was a kid, punishment in school was likely to include standing up front where the whole class would watch you (and giggle). Today, a humiliating punishment (to a teenager) might include not being allowed to go to a dance or party "that EVERYONE is going to," or just about anything that would make the teenager look different from all his/her nonconformist set.
