I would like to put forward this question concerning the use of
intravenous Ampicillin.
An adult inpatient in the medical department died after he was
given IV Ampiclox ( Ampicillin & Cloxacillin Preparation ) - despite
the fact that he was known to be allergic to the preparation ( the
nurse's mistake).
After this incident, head nurses in our Pediatric Department are
doing an intradermal ampicillin allergy test ( + saline control) for
EVERY SINGLE CHILD before giving IV Ampicillin regardless of whether or
not there is history of prior reactions.
I'd appreciate your feed-back concerning this. What is the general
protocol followed in hospitals in the States and other countries?
Thank you,
Dr. Dina Ramadan, DCH, MRCP
