I'm also on LACTNET, the lactation bulletin board, and the Babywise program has been discussed extensively. Apparently there have been numerous issues with failure to thrive induced by having the infant on such a strict feeding program and discouraging frequent feedings. Also, the program certainly doesn't promote attachment parenting and doesn't encourage parents to respond appropriately to babies' clues and need for lots of holding, cuddling, & attention. (In fact, it's "detachment" parenting.) I think it's dangerous. Yet, the books are everywhere. The article in the AAP news is one of the first things I've seen in the pediatric literature about this program. I do think the AAP needs to look at it closely and make some sort of determination and statement about it. Anyone else have any thoughts? Linda L. Shaw MD FAAP Altoona PA
