Re from a 3rd world perspective: discussion on LCs

I have been trained in India, where breast feeding is a religion among Pediatricians and have also worked in the US and now in Australia. My opinion is that it is all very well to be fanatical about BF in the 3rd world where bottle feeding often means death from diarrhoea (I am not kidding) but in the US/Oz, it should be a very flexible choice which should be left to the mum. And if some well meaning health professional advises formula feeding, it is not such a huge crime- the bub will do fine! Promotion of BF should NOT be a huge priority in the 1st world! An analogy is that it is not acceptable for parents to choose not to give polio/pertussis vaccines to their kids in India. In the US, even though pediatricians would favour the giving of vaccines, they would not castigate parents to the same extent for not giving them as in India.
