Shaken Baby Syndrome

Dipesh,

As the adoptive mother of a "Shaken Baby" who is now 6 years old who has
recently had a real scare with subdural bleeds I may be able to offer a
similar experience with explanation.......

Matthew was severely shaken at 2 1/2 months of age and had both the brain
bleeds and retinal hemorrages. At the age of 6 years he was thought to have a
tethered cord and so an MRI was obtained of brain and spinal cord. The folks
in radiology were alarmed when they saw that he had massive subdural
hematoma's. We were questioned about any recent falls, etc..... There were
no known injuries. After seeing a neurosurgeon at Duke University and a
repeat CT we learned that he had two hematomas, one on each side of his brain
about 1 cm thick and each covering the entire hemisphere. Basically it was
described as a "carpet of blood". They also told us that this was from his
original injury during infancy, that the bloods can stay there
permanently......

I would think that if a hematoma is present 6 years after injury that one
month is not unusual by any means.
