How would the providers out there have responded to this situation: 7:00 pm phone call regarding a 12 year old girl who is "constipated" (hasn't had a stool for more that one day) and c/o abdominal pain for that day and the previous day. The child was given some Senokot and prunes the day before without any effect. A suggestion is made for the child to be given a glycerin suppository and if there is no stool to try an enema since she's reportedly quite uncomfortable. 9:30 pm phone call that there was no stool after the suppository but now she's vomited and is not feeling better. In response to the question "Is her stomach bloated?" the response is "yes." The mother says that earlier in the day the abdominal pain was quite severe, now it's not as severe, and it seems to be "coming and going in waves." What would you recommend to the child's family? Thanks for any responses (and no I don't have a band count <G>). Michael Sachs, M.D. General Pediatrician
