Sorry - I had my response to a private message from a friend on the list :) >I agree that subjects like this are appropriate (and necessary) for >PedTalk, but I don't want to overload the list with mundane questions. >But since you don't run A/V software, do you open Word documents which are >sent to you by people you know? Isn't there a chance there could be a >macro virus which the person sending it might not even be aware of? You'll love this: 1) I hate Word, I use Word Perfect. 2) No one sends me Word documents that I don't know the source of (and has them opened by me). I am truly ridiculous about this - but this is a true story: When I receive a DOC or other such extension, my system is set up to run WORDPAD to open the file (should I choose to open it), which does not have macro capabilities (I don't think). If WordPad can't read it - then I look further into the source. One time I received an email with a .DOC attachment with the message reading: "enclosed are my system specs, pls reply" No other info. I wrote back: "pls put your specs in text format in the email message or further identify yourself, your needs, etc. Our office policy is to not open any attachments from unknown sources. Sorry for the inconvenience". I never heard back :) Maybe not the same consequences as *safe sex*, but I try to practice/promote *safe computing*, it can saves hrs/days of hardship.
