Re: Dermabond and dog bites

As a matter of fact 3M says that the infection rate with Dermabond is
the same as that with sutures. It is O2 permeable.

I routinely suture bites to the face for the cosmetic effect and treat
prophylactically with Augmentin. Bites elsewhere depend on the
severity, and I don't treat prophylactically.

This child was placed on Augmentin by the ER.

I completely agree that bite wounds need COPIOUS irrigation. I START
with 500ml saline, and often use more. I don't know how well the ER
irrigated.

After seeing this wound basically build up pus underneath the
Dermabond seal until it finally ruptured through, I don't think I'll
ever use Dermabond on bite wounds. At least with sutures drainage
would be immediate.
