The 515 deaths reported over the 8 year period of time included ALL the deaths in an adult bed. Therefore, I am assuming that the 2705 SIDS reported deaths/year occurred in other than an adult bed. Which, of course, then asks the question: Were, in fact, some of those 15 deaths/year that were attributed to "overlaying" in fact, really SIDS, but the parents/adults assumed that they MUST HAVE accidently smothered the baby in their sleep? It's very difficult to tell the difference between SIDS and smothering, and the coroners in the cases were anything from lay people to forensic pathologists, so it's anyone's guess as to what the real cause of death was.
