Physician’s Computer Company (PCC) Partners with American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on Childhood Obesity Study

WINOOSKI, Vt., Dec. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/

Physician’s Computer Company (PCC), the leading EHR vendor for independent pediatricians nationwide, has announced a collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and 18 pediatric practices throughout the country to research childhood obesity. The BMI 2+ Study, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHBLI), will involve the AAP’s Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) research network and will measure the effects of Motivational Interviewing on obesity outcomes in children 3-8 years of age.

PCC has worked with PROS multiple times in the past. What makes the partnership unique for this study is the level of PCC’s involvement. PCC will work on recruitment, data extraction, and transmission of HIPAA-limited and PHI data. The company will also facilitate communication among other organizations involved in the study, including the University of Michigan and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

To date, PCC has recruited 18 pediatric practices to participate in the study. Pediatricians, along with a team of trained Registered Dieticians from the University of Michigan, will involve up to 50 patients per practice over the next year, providing in-person and telephone counseling sessions using motivational interviewing techniques.

“PCC is a great fit for this study since our customer base is engaged and we communicate well with them.  This has made it easier for us to facilitate communication between our clients and study team leaders at the AAP. Our software products are also very configurable, allowing us to create a specialized visit template for study participants,” said Tim Proctor of the PCC Pediatric Solutions Team.

Chip Hart, PCC’s Director of Pediatric Solutions commented, “As a mission-based company, it’s rewarding to work on a project that will directly improve the care for kids. So much of what we have to deliver to pediatricians is about a government or insurance requirement, so we’re delighted to be able to focus on the patients for once. We were also really impressed with our clients’ reaction to this opportunity – they have to do a lot of free work, but they do it because they are pediatricians.”
